After the Boston Overflight Noise Study Record of Decision was issued, FAA began the process of implementing the approved procedures. The procedures involve either conventional or Area Navigation (RNAV) means of navigation. RNAV enables aircraft to fly on any desired flight path within the coverage of ground- or spaced-based navigation aids, within the limits of the capability of the air traffic control environment, or a combination of both capabilities. Conventional procedures primarily involve air traffic control issued headings (or vectoring) or use of existing navigational aids and, therefore, can be implemented in a timelier manner.

RNAV procedures require a more detailed review and design by the FAA prior to implementation (e.g., safety risk assessment and RNAV 18-step Process). The 18-step process is a standardized, systematic FAA process that oversees the publication and implementation of RNAV procedures. It advances a draft procedure to ensure all technical and safety criteria meet FAA requirements within all FAA lines of business, as well as ensure coordination efforts with the affected airline users. When completed, the procedure will be published and available for use by the affected airline users.

This page is intended to provide you a progress update on the implementation process. For each type of measure, status is reported.
